Swell from Hurricane Danielle is due to start filling in up coast tonight and should continue to build throughout the day and into Sunday. It looks like that North and Central Florida will receive the brunt of the initial swell from Danielle, but as we get into Sunday afternoon and into the beginning of next week, we’ll see a building wind swell for the entire east coast of Florida that should last through at least mid week. Soon to be Hurricane Earl will then follow up with swell in the Wednesday/Thursday time frame, which will be right around the time the wind starts dying off as well. Stay tuned…

Check out this article from Stab Magazine’s website featuring Biolos’s top ten things that you should know about surfboard design.

Stab’s guide to surfboard design for dummies

1. Boards with a straight rocker paddle faster. And, paddling is 50 per cent of the game. If you can’t catch waves, you can’t surf. Even if you’re surfing two-foot windblown peaks with three friends, you still have to compete to get waves. And, you thought it was all about thickness, right? It’s not; it’s how the bottom moves across the water. However…

2. Volume is your friend. You can have a really thick board, but if you put a vee bottom in it rides neutral, whereas a medium-thickness board with concave can ride flat like a plank.

3.Tail shapes don’t matter as much as you think. If the width going into the tail is the same, a square, a squash, a diamond or a swallow is going to behave in a similar way. Round tails and pintails decrease the rail line, so they’re going to hold a little better and shorten a turn radius.

4. I don’t buy into the whole back-foot/front-foot surfer thing. We’re all surfing from the back foot. You’re either a weak back-foot surfer or a strong back-foot surfer. You push hard or you don’t. You’re either Taylor Knox or a flicky little kid.

5. Look at the outline of your board. Straight lines go fast. Curved lines turn. Simple.

6. The straighter the rocker, the further back you need to stand and boards with a continual rocker have a bigger sweet spot. However, and this is a big however, a drivier board will be more forgiving in picking up speed, just less forgiving when you need to turn.

7. Match the curve of the board to the curve of the wave. This is for the average surfer. Everything goes out the window for pros – they can do anything. I travel with a curvy board and a flat board: curvy boards for the Gold Coast and for Sydney shorebreaks.Flatter boards for mushy points or blown out crumblers. On a planky board, it ain’t gonna work when you need to jump to your feet and bottom turn in one quick move. And, when you do get up, all you’re going to do is parallel floaters.

8. There’s a magic number and it’s called your cubic volume. It’s up to us shapers to educate people, and it’s information available, right now, on our shaping machines. Let me explain. One of my team riders, Shea Lopez, was teasing me about how big my boards are. We were down at Lowers, two fat cocktails in hand, and he grabbed my board and said, “Have a fucking look at this boat!” And, I said: “Well, I’m fat, I’m 40, but you know what, fucker? I bet my volume-to-weight ratio is not far from your’s. I’m 30 per cent heavier and have maybe 30 per cent more volume. The difference is, I’m a desk jockey and you’re a professional athlete.” If we know our cubic volumes, all the other dimensions can be left to the shaper. Instead of saying, I ride 6’1”s x 18 5/8” x 2 5/16”, you’d say, I’m a 42, make me a small-wave craft. This does require a degree of trust in your shaper. Which leads me to…

9. There are two types of shapers you can trust. One is the local shaper who knows the conditions and who probably knows how you surf. That’s a certain kind of trust. Then there’s the trust you have for an international shaper. You trust Al Merrick because he consistently makes great boards for great surfers and for the globall market. If you live in Santa Barbara, where Al lives, you get local and international knowledge. If you live on the Gold Coast, you get both: Darren Handley and Jason Stevenson. If you live in Sydney, you get both: James Cheal (Chilli). If you live in San Clemente, you get Timmy Patterson and me. But, if you live in, say, Adelaide, you might have to balance the tradeoff between local and global knowledge.

10. Balance in a surfboard is everything and shapers walk a tightrope every time they build you a custom board. If you want a board with a lot of rocker, your shaper has to build everything around it to balance it out. If one element is extreme, the rest of the board has to act as a counterbalance to neutralize the extreme. Greg Webber was a genius on the wire. Everything is balance.

Jonny skated with some of FL’s best in the contest including Yonnie Cruz, Jeremy Knibbs, Robbie Kirkland and others. Surprisingly an Orlando local came out on top at a Tampa contest. For those of you who have been to an all ages contest at SPoT, it is pretty tough to place better than someone at their home park with judges that don’t know you. So congrats to Jonny for getting 1st place and winning a fresh new iPod. Look out for photos and video later this week.
Big thanks to the judges Porpe Angel, Justin Ryan, and Pat Stiener. Not an easy set of judges to please.
Congrats to the top 3. Yonnie Cruz and Jeremy Knibbs are unbelievable skateboarders. I still am in disbelief that Jonny came out on top. Thanks for everything SPoT!

As you all have heard, this past weekend was Red Bull Manny Mania. This event has been going on in FL for the past few years, and this year we were fortunate enough to have the event take place in Orlando. It all went down at Universal’s City Walk unfortunately though, where beers are $10, parking is $15, and the ground is made of rough cement laced with holes. Despite the triple digit heat, the shoddy ground, and slew of tourists, our boys came up big time in the contest!

Bert had placed second last year in Miami’s Many Mania, and came through this year. He easily had the most tricks landed out of the whole day. Here is a gap to 180 switch manny on the lilly pads. These things destroyed people all day. They are way harder to skate than they look.

The crowd got to look on from some nice bleachers, while the rest of us got to chill under the shade in the VIP with free Moes catering. We all got to watch everyone from the state of Florida rip, and try and go for a chance to win a trip out to the finals in NYC. Shop rider Jonny Scianneaux came through with a 1st place qualification getting him into the finals. Out of the 40+ entrants, our shop was the only one to have all three of our riders entered make it to the finals. So congrats to Jack, Bert, and Jonny.

As usual RIPNDIP was there to hook the crowd up. For the first time ever RND got some recognition on the mic from the SPoT dudes. It’s hard to get the SPoT crew to notice you let alone be hyped on you, so getting some support from some of the industry’s biggest haters was pretty sick. Congrats to O’Con.

Bert had all sorts of manny variations throughout the day and used the whole course as a playground. Here is a lipslide 270 to manny down the cheese wedge. It hurts my head trying to think about turning like that while sitting on a curved circle rail.

One of the biggest surprises of the day was by far Jack Moran. He came through big time and had one of the sickest tricks of the day by far. Here is a nollie halfcab fakie manny bigspin out. Jack also came through with a ton of other manny tricks earning him 6th place. Jack easily got the most shout outs on the mic the whole day. We are psyched to have him on the team.

After the finals Jonny almost had a heat stroke and couldn’t breathe. Luckily the Red Bull girls were there to give him some much needed TLC. Hah. We need to get this kid an inhaler or something. In the end, Bert got 1st, Jonny got 3rd, and we all spent some time relaxing at the DoubleTree hotel with some much needed cold ones.

We Out!

The crew over at Surfline recently put up a photo feature covering much of the east coast during last week’s swell. Included in the feature were shots of both Catalyst team riders Eddie Guilbeau and Blake Jones. An honorable mention also goes to Justin Jones (Blake’s older bro for those who don’t know) who scored a pretty lofty backside air shot in the feature as well. We’ve captured a few of the images for you below, but to see the entire feature, go to it right here at Surfline.com.
